Yes of course you can, you don’t actually need a web based control panel at all, you can install and configure everything by hand, but it’s a lot more complicated and I only recommend it for Linux experts.
There a quite a few other free and paid control panels out there, it is my opinion that EHCP force is the best of the free ones, I tried several before deciding on EHCP force.
